Hello Derby Fans, Dr. Brew here, Head Referee for the Brewcity Bruisers for the 2013 season. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has issued a new rule set for 2013 that completely overhauls the way women’s (and men’s) roller derby will be played. I am here to describe some of the changes so you will know what to expect at our bouts this season.

Holy crap! Anyone who thought the bouts in March were heart-stopping probably would have been well served carrying a defibrillator into the Cell on April 14 (Milwaukee Day!) for the pulse-pounding semifinals. The Brewcity Bruisers are saving their best for later in the season this year, as the semis produced the biggest thrills and most drama of 2012. Let's dispense with the foreplay and get right to it.

The Semi-Finals!

I hope you didn’t miss those last two bouts on April 14th! They were some nail biters! The winless Rushin’ Rollettes upset the undefeated Maiden Milwaukee with a score of 79-78. The Shevil Knevils almost took down the Crazy Eights in the second bout but the Eights powered back strong in the end to win it 82-79.

The bouts are competitions between two teams. Each bout is made up of two halves and the halves at the BCB bouts are 20 minutes each. The halves are divided into multiple Jams where the teams compete to score points. The longest a Jam can last is two minutes and there are 30 seconds between each Jam.If you want to learn more about roller derby rules, check out http://www.wftda.com/rules.
