We, the Brewcity Bruisers – Milwaukee’s first (and only!) all-female, flat-track roller derby league – would like to cordially invite you and yours to join us Saturday, 5/11/2013, at the US Cellular Arena for the closing bout of our 2013 home season.

Dori Zori of 88.9 Radio Milwaukee will be keeping the tuneage rockin’ while the girls go round all night, while Freshluggage takes over the tables for the sure to be epic after party at Turner. Can you believe it, Milwaukee? The Bruisers’ 2013 home season is in its final stretch, and you better believe the exciting stuff starts now. Sunday, 4/21/2013, 2pm = the Brewcity Bruisers‘ semi-final throwdown! (Doors at 1pm, whistle at 2pm, y’all.)

Not that it wasn’t exciting before… believe us, it definitely was. The 2013 BCB home season journey to now has been full of ups and downs for each team: injuries, learnings, successes and challenges. New players have come into their own, vets have amped up their game, and refs and NSOs have worked tirelessly to bring Milwaukee’s derby game to you – the fans! – in the most mind-blowing-ly awesome way possible. And now, the right to play in the championship bout is on the line for all four teams. See the Rushin Rollettes battle the Crazy 8s in the first half and then it’s the Shevil Knevils and Maiden Milwaukee in half numero dos.

As always, Bob Noxious and Dr. Awkward will be rockin’ the mic right, keeping you in-the-know about what’s going down on the track, and DJ Andrew Walter will be kickin’ out the jams as the girls go round and round. Get your hands on some stellar merch – pre-packaged sets of koozies featuring home team logos will be on sale for just ten bucks! (We’ve also got super-cute BCB tanks just in time for spring/summer, as well as men’s limited edition team tees.)

Interleague bouts exhibit a higher standard of play as All Star coach, Jodee Licious elaborates, “For the fan, they can expect a more intense experience. Everything the fan loves about home season will be amplified in this game, harder hits and more aggressive skating.”

Adult tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Youth tickets, for kids 12 and under, are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Children under 5 receive free admission.

Milwaukee’s Hope House is an emergency and transitional living facility as well as a true community center located in the near south side of Milwaukee.

Meet our trainer: Ryan Lowery

Ryan, what is your role with the Brewcity Bruisers? I attend practices and bouts in order to provide on-site injury prevention and care.  This includes activities such as stretching, taping, evaluation of- and immediate response to injuries.  I also provide follow-up care and expert advice to help guide athletes through the entire process of their injuries.  This allows them to return to play quickly and safely following injury.  In addition, I help work with the organization to develop policies, procedures and programs for injury prevention and management.

What is your academic background:   I am originally from Green Bay, WI and have been practicing as a Certified Athletic Trainer for over five years.  I earned my bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Northern Michigan University in May of 2007, followed by a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science also from NMU in December of 2009.  I hold certifications as an Athletic Trainer (ATC;L) and a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Tell us about your professional experience:  Over the past five years, I have acted in many different roles as a Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainer.  Some examples include NCAA Division II athletics, instruction of collegiate courses, Junior A Hockey, Semi-Pro and Professional Football, Outpatient Orthopedics and Surgical Assistance, Competitive Gymnastics and of course, Roller Derby!

Last month the two-time defending champion Crazy 8s fell in mildly surprising fashion to a possibly resurgent Rushin’ Rollettes team, largely due to a rash of penalties that took the ninjas out of their usual game of aggressive contact and smart positional blocking. This month, though, they got their groove back and went with what works: packs of insurmountable black and yellow as impregnable as the Great Wall of China. The 8s had their way with the Maidens in the pack and allowed for big jams from jammers like Zo-Tay and new Indiana transplant Sorah Bones.

The Maidens didn’t help themselves much, though, as they got into the same penalty trouble that haunted the 8s last month. Jammer penalties kept the pink and black jammers firmly planted in the sin bin while the 8s blockers repeatedly ground the pack’s motion to a halt. They attempted to make the most of their power-jam opportunities by forcing the Maidens to stay close and let the 8s jammer creep past, lest they draw an intentional pack destruction penalty (a strategy that also tends to draw a ton of clockwise-blocking penalties, which is quite exciting). Before the Maidens could realize what was happening, they were looking at a 100-point deficit and an inauspicious 0-2 start to their 2013.

Bout 2: Shevil Knevils 101, Rushin’ Rollettes 77

Fun fact: in the 7-year history of the Brewcity Bruisers, the Rushin’ Rollettes had previously beaten the Shevil Knevils seven out of ten times, and each of the Shevils’ three wins have been by merely one point. Another fun fact: the Shevil Knevils have averaged 101 points in their two bouts this year! After achieving a one-point nailbiter victory last month against Maiden Milwaukee, the Shevils decided that this was the night to finally deliver what they haven’t been able to do in their team’s history—not only beat the Rollettes, but beat them convincingly. This they pulled off by skating perhaps the most complete game this intrepid derby announcer has seen the Shevils play.

The Shevils’ pack play was smart, clean, and assertive, using positional blocking to open up lanes for jammers like Skittle, Bloody Cupcake and Puss N’ Boots. The Rollettes made a game of it, though, as they always do. New Rollette sensation Chewbecca the Wrecka kept up the torrid pace she set last month (when she torched the 8s for 62 points), and a couple late powerjams gave the Rollettes a chance as they pulled within just a few points of a lead change (drink!). But the Shevils were able to pull away in the final minute and secure a hard-fought, disciplined 24-point lead.

Next Month! Can the Shevils make it a 3-0 start against the Crazy 8s, or will they jump the shark against the Black and Yellow? Will Maiden Milwaukee finally get in the win column, or will the Rollettes rebound? And who’s psyched for INTERLEAGUE DERBY at the Cell? That’s right, Brewcity is bringing you TWO action-packed nights of derby in March, with a home season bout and a Travel Team contest within two weeks of each other! Show up. Or I’ll cry or something.
