Fans of the Brewcity Bruisers’ Battlestars and All-Stars should expect exciting game play and victory for both teams as BCB kicks off their interleague season play at 7 p.m. this Saturday, February 7, at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion in State Fair Park. There, the Battlestars will take on the 920 Honeys, a mixer team of Fox Cities Roller Derby and Stevens Point’s Mid-State Sisters of Skate, while the All-Stars will face off against the DuPage Derby Dames’ Uproar team, hailing from just outside of Chicago.

Jodee Benavides, coach of the All-Stars, expressed confidence that his team’s high skill set plus a key shift in the team’s training focus will lead to ultimate success.

“I am truly excited to move forward with this season,” Benavides said. “This is the best collection of talent I have ever had to work with. There is a lot of potential and I am proud to work with these awesome women to tear into new territory.”

New All-Stars include Shevil Knevils Thrash Mama and Violet Femme, Maidens Super Hera and Mary, Mother of Quad, Crazy 8 D’Amanda Beating, and Rushin’ Rollette rookie Jackpot. Benavides said he believes the combination of new and established talent is the best the league has seen yet.

Coach Machete Holiday said the Battlestars also have an exciting mix of vets and rookies on the roster. New Battlestars include Maidens Danger and LuBird, Shevil Knevil Bashforth, and Crazy 8 Schoolhouse Rock, who are home team rookies. He also said that Skully Wheeler, who is in her second season as a Rushin’ Rollette, will be skating her first game as a Battlestar.

Last season, Machete said the Battlestars finished 7-2, losing only to Ohio’s and Minnesota’s B teams, ranked in the WFTDA Top 20 and Top 10, respectively.

“We came very close to winning against Ohio and had long periods of matching Minnesota jam for jam,” he said.

This season’s goals include shut-down defense and building, in Machete’s words, “utility players that can adjust to as many derby situations as possible.”

Benavides said his vision for the All-Stars, who finished 14-7 last season, involves completely revamping the jam start and focusing on winning the first five seconds.

“When Championships were in Milwaukee in late 2013, I pulled aside the coach of (#1 ranked) Gotham and picked his brain. He told me that winning lead was how they spent the majority of their time.”

Benavides said this is a shift from traditional derby training that emphasizes mid-play game such as transitions from offense to defense. But after studying stats and seeing how winning teams had a much higher lead jam rate, he knew this was the strategy to pursue.

“A team that gets routinely beat at the start of the jam and finds themselves putting the majority of work into drills that get them out of bad situations is practicing for second place. I am focused on practicing to be first,” he said.

Benavides predicts that the audience should expect to see a much more physical style of jamming, including fast starts with punishing defense and efficient offense.

Off the track, Machete said he wants to continue building a positive team identity and fan base and showing the fans how much the team appreciates their support.

“This is a group of athletes that are proud to be Brewcity Battlestars and incredibly proud to be representing the Brewcity Bruisers and supporting our All-Stars!”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for kids, seniors, and members of the military. The after party will be at the Jock Stop in West Allis.
